EKids - Week 2 (Armour of Godliness)

Bible Story
“Gideon” (Judges 6:1-32)

GIVE each child a paper plate and a coloring utensil.
ALLOW kids to put plates on top of heads.

Then, READ the story below.
(ALLOW kids to look at their drawings and score them based on the numbers below:)

In the Bible, we can read a story about a man named Gideon from Judges 6. Gideon learned how to let God protect him and help him make the right choice. As I read this Bible story, I will give you instructions about what to draw on your plate! BUT…you have to put the plate on top of your head while you draw!

God’s people, the Israelites, had disobeyed God. Because of that, He allowed their enemies to come and take over their land. These enemies were called the Midianites, and they were very mean to the Israelites. What would you do if people were being mean to you? (Allow responses)

Well, when the Israelites were afraid, they hid in caves or tunnels underground.
On your plate, DRAW a cave where someone could hide! (Allow kids to draw)

The Israelites knew they needed help, so they prayed to God. Even though the Israelites had disobeyed God He helped them!

God sent an angel to speak to an Israelite named Gideon. When the angel came to Gideon, he was preparing some of his crops while hiding in an underground cave. Now, everyone DRAW Gideon hiding in the cave on your plate! (Allow kids to draw)

The angel said to Gideon, “Mighty warrior, the Lord is with you.” But Gideon asked why God was letting so many bad things happen if He was with them. Have you ever felt like God wasn’t with you? (Allow responses) He is always with you and He sees you as a mighty warrior!

Then the angel said, “You are strong. Go and save Israel.” Gideon argued, saying that his family was weak and that he was the least important member of his family. But God promised to be with Gideon and give him victory over the enemy.

Gideon now believed that God was protecting him and would help him do the right thing! Because this was a big turning point for Gideon, I want everyone to turn their plates over and DRAW Gideon on the new side of your plate! (Allow kids to draw)

Later that night, God spoke to Gideon again, so DRAW a moon and stars around Gideon on your plate! (Allow kids to draw) God told Gideon to tear down an altar and a pole that the people were using to worship two false gods. Then, Gideon was supposed to build an altar to God where people could come and worship.

Gideon knew that doing this would make some people really mad, but he obeyed anyways, because he knew it was the right thing God wanted him to do. And God was with Gideon the whole time, protecting his heart from giving in to fears and giving him the power to do what was right. To help you remember how God protected Gideon’s heart, DRAW a heart on his chest. (Allow kids to draw)
God has given us this same power, too! All we have to do is suit up with the Armor of Godliness! This is the piece of God’s armor that He uses to protect our hearts from wanting to do the wrong thing while helping us have the power to do the right thing. So everyone DRAW a piece of armor over the heart on your plate. (Allow kids to draw)

 Gideon is inside the cave on the first side of the plate = +5 points
 The moon or stars are covering Gideon on the second side = -2 points
 The heart is actually covered by the armor = +5 points

The God Buffet Our primary source of "knowledge" when it comes to God, His purposes and will is obviously the Bible. This marvelous book holds all we need for a lifetime of revelation and awe as we pursue a deeper relationship with the Lord. We believe that God will never contradict His Word, thus any "revelation" outside the parameters of the Bible cannot be accepted as having the same authority as the Word itself. Tradition and culture, though they play a role in shaping the mind and identity of man, must never have a greater influence on us than the Bible. Dreams and visions might be compelling, but if they contradict scripture they are might as well be fairytales. The doctrines and philosophies of man must take a back seat in the life of the believer, for in this regard the Word of God is in a category of its own. It must be said that the role of the Holy Spirit in the interpretation of the Bible cannot be overstated. I believe that without the illu...
Hearing and doing I'm amazed at how easy it becomes to nod our heads at all the right places after serving God for a while. We are quick to agree when someone speaks to us about God's Word (given that it is sound doctrine of course), without asking ourselves if it is merely theory to us. The fact of the matter is that most of us believe what the Bible teaches with all our hearts. How is it then that we so easily fall into the trap of knowing but not applying? Hearing but not doing? How do we keep ourselves from thinking we know it all but hold on to a zeal for God's Word that leads to obedience? It is relatively easy to read the 'thou shalt not' passages, to apply it and to tap ourselves on the shoulder thinking we did well! Of course we are doing well if we abstain from all the things we know is bad for us - sinful behaviors, unhealthy attitudes, etc. - but I do think there is more to living a life of abundance and victory! There are many pas...

A Christian Perspective on Fasting

A Christian Perspective on Fasting Throughout the ages of the Christian centuries, fasting has been viewed both positively and negatively. John Wesley said, "Some have exalted religious fasting beyond all Scripture and reason; and others have utterly disregarded it."  At times it has been considered to be a panacea of all spiritual problems, an activity permeated with magical powers.  This is not unrelated to the problems experienced in biblical times in the matter of fasting. For example, consider what Isaiah had to say, "'Why have we fasted,' they say,'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. (Isa. 58:3) At other times fasting has been considered as something that is "old fashioned" and not belonging to the life of the Christian.  So, what is fasting? Is it a part of a Christia...
