Ekids - Week 4 (Shield of Faith)

Bible Story Page (4-5)
“Exploring Canaan” (Numbers 13-14)

GIVE each child a paper plate and a coloring utensil. Then, SAY:
ALLOW kids to put plates on top of heads. Then, READ the story below.
ALLOW kids to look at their drawings and score them based on the numbers below:

In Numbers 13-14, there is a story about two men who relied on their faith in God to protect their hearts when everyone else was weakr. As I read this Bible story, I will give you instructions about what to draw on your plate! BUT…you have to put the plate on top of your head while you draw!

A long time ago, God’s people, the Israelites, were slaves in Egypt. But God used a man named Moses to free them from slavery and lead them to the amazing land that God promised them.

After being in the desert for many years, Moses and the Israelites finally arrived at Canaan, the land that God had promised to give them. Moses chose 12 men to go into the land. He wanted them to see what it looked like, if there were enemies there, and if it would be a good place to grow their crops. On your plate, DRAW 12 men. (Allow kids to draw)

The men went into the land and saw that it would be a great place to grow their crops. This land was truly amazing! God promised to give the Israelites a land that was better than they could imagine. Does God always do what He promises to do? (Yes) What are some things He promises to do? (Always be with us, always love us, protect us, reward us, forgive us, etc.)

Well the men didn’t remember God’s promise because there was a huge problem! The people living in Canaan were GIANT and very powerful! The men knew that they had to go back and tell Moses what they had seen.

When the men came back to where the Israelites were camped, ten of them were very scared and said that God’s people should NOT go into the land, even though God had promised to give it to them! On your plate, DRAW a circle around ten of the men! (Allow kids to draw) What do you think you would’ve done in this situation? (Allow responses)

Well, two of the men named Joshua and Caleb used their faith in God as a shield to protect their hearts from being afraid like the other ten men. They told everyone that God was with them and wanted them to go into the land. He would help them defeat this enemy.

Unlike Joshua and Caleb, though, the rest of God’s people did not use their faith like shields. Instead of defending their weaknesses by trusting God, they let their weakness of fear take over. As a result, God did not let anyone except Joshua and Caleb go into Canaan.

Turn your plate over and DRAW Joshua and Caleb inside Canaan. (Allow kids to draw) Did God come through for Joshua and Caleb when they had faith in Him? (Yes) Will God always come through for us? (Yes – we can always put our faith in Him)

There will be times in our lives when we have weaknesses, such as being afraid like the Israelites were or looking at things we shouldn’t. But remember that God gives us the shield of faith to defend ourselves when we are feeling weak. All we have to do is trust God and believe that He will keep His promises.
Now, I want you to DRAW a BIG shield around the picture of Joshua and Caleb on your plate. This will help you remember to Suit Up with the Shield of Faith! (Allow kids to draw)

The God Buffet Our primary source of "knowledge" when it comes to God, His purposes and will is obviously the Bible. This marvelous book holds all we need for a lifetime of revelation and awe as we pursue a deeper relationship with the Lord. We believe that God will never contradict His Word, thus any "revelation" outside the parameters of the Bible cannot be accepted as having the same authority as the Word itself. Tradition and culture, though they play a role in shaping the mind and identity of man, must never have a greater influence on us than the Bible. Dreams and visions might be compelling, but if they contradict scripture they are might as well be fairytales. The doctrines and philosophies of man must take a back seat in the life of the believer, for in this regard the Word of God is in a category of its own. It must be said that the role of the Holy Spirit in the interpretation of the Bible cannot be overstated. I believe that without the illu...
Hearing and doing I'm amazed at how easy it becomes to nod our heads at all the right places after serving God for a while. We are quick to agree when someone speaks to us about God's Word (given that it is sound doctrine of course), without asking ourselves if it is merely theory to us. The fact of the matter is that most of us believe what the Bible teaches with all our hearts. How is it then that we so easily fall into the trap of knowing but not applying? Hearing but not doing? How do we keep ourselves from thinking we know it all but hold on to a zeal for God's Word that leads to obedience? It is relatively easy to read the 'thou shalt not' passages, to apply it and to tap ourselves on the shoulder thinking we did well! Of course we are doing well if we abstain from all the things we know is bad for us - sinful behaviors, unhealthy attitudes, etc. - but I do think there is more to living a life of abundance and victory! There are many pas...

A Christian Perspective on Fasting

A Christian Perspective on Fasting Throughout the ages of the Christian centuries, fasting has been viewed both positively and negatively. John Wesley said, "Some have exalted religious fasting beyond all Scripture and reason; and others have utterly disregarded it."  At times it has been considered to be a panacea of all spiritual problems, an activity permeated with magical powers.  This is not unrelated to the problems experienced in biblical times in the matter of fasting. For example, consider what Isaiah had to say, "'Why have we fasted,' they say,'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. (Isa. 58:3) At other times fasting has been considered as something that is "old fashioned" and not belonging to the life of the Christian.  So, what is fasting? Is it a part of a Christia...
