The
man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out
from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced
east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south
of the altar. He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around
the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the
south side. As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he
measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was
ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water
that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water
that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a
river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough
to swim in--a river that no one could cross. He asked me, "Son of man, do
you see this?" Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I
arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. He said
to me, "This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the
Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty
water there becomes fresh. Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the
river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows
there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will
live. Fishermen will stand along the shore; from En Gedi to En Eglaim there will
be places for spreading nets. The fish will be of many kinds--like the fish of
the Mediterranean Sea. But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they
will be left for salt. Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the
river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month
they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their
fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing."
(Ezekiel 47:1-12)
The River from the
Throne
Then
the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal,
flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great
street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing
twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the
tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The
throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve
him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There
will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of
the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever
and ever.
(Revelation 22:1-5)
Christ, the Source
Jesus
answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for
a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living
water." "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw
with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater
than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did
also his sons and his livestock?" Jesus answered, "Everyone who
drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give
them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a
spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said to him,
"Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming
here to draw water."
(John 4:10-15)
Planted by the river
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the
wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day
and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields
its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-- whatever they do prospers.
Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the
wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the
righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of
the wicked leads to destruction.
(Psalms 1:1-6)
The Flowing River
On the last
and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of
living water will flow from within them." By this he meant the Spirit,
whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the
Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
(John 7:37-39)
The Call to Come
"Come,
all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come,
buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend
money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen,
listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of
fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an
everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David. See, I have
made him a witness to the peoples, a ruler and commander of the peoples. Surely
you will summon nations you know not, and nations you do not know will come
running to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he
has endowed you with splendor." Seek the LORD while he may be found; call
on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous
their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and
to our God, for he will freely pardon. "For my thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the
heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and
flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is
my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will
accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will
go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst
into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the
myrtle will grow. This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign,
that will endure forever."
(Isaiah 55:1-13)
The Day of the Lord
On
that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. It will be a
unique day--a day known only to the LORD--with no distinction between day and
night. When evening comes, there will be light. On that day living water will
flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to
the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter. The LORD will be king over the
whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.
(Zechariah 14:6-9)
